Sea Isle City Week – Part I – Opening Weekend

Sea Isle BeachOn July 17th, I embarked on my first shore house experience, and looked to turn around a, let’s face it, fairly mediocre summer.

Having spent most of my years in Ocean County within 30 minutes of Seaside, Belmar, Point and Manasquan, I’ve always been too close to the shore to ever justify spending money on any type of summer share. After last summer, the crew decided to get a house for a week down in Sea Isle City – far enough and different enough from the usual spots for everyone that it made too much sense not to jump in.

After all the hype all off-season and into the summer, Friday night brought the arrivals for the West side of the house, a ton of excitement and… Continue reading

Last Time I Checked the Calendar…

We’re now a full five weeks into “the summer that wasn’t” with nary a beach day to be found. Really, the only legitimate start-to-finish, no onshore breeze beach day occurred way back on, ironically, April 26th. Since then, we’ve battled a seemingly endless mix of wind, clouds and rain as April doesn’t seem to want to end. Needless to say, it has put a serious damper on the summer at the shore vibe and many of the usual suspects from last year’s “crew” have failed to make a return trip down since our lively Memorial Day weekend kick-off (more on that later).

T-Minus 4 Days…

After what’s seemed like an endless winter, shore season is finally, FINALLY, upon us! The sun, the sand, the jersey shore cover bands… not to mention we resume the battle of good (locals) vs. evil (the gweed) as the bennys make their descent down the Garden State Parkway in just a few short days.

This upcoming summer already has a slightly different feel and one might say anxiety about it; since we last left things in July, parts of our crew have either gotten married, broken up, turned 30, started new relationships or moved across state lines. But probably most crucially, while the balance of power resided in Belmar last season, this year we are without a true home base so spontaneity is less of an option. Taxi cabs and party vans need to be reserved in advance, and no man shall, nor really can, be left behind. So this is a recipe for a big letdown, right? No way.

Despite lack of happy hour specials, we are all absolutely pumped to be kicking off the big holiday weekend in style at the Parker House with the music of Generation Next in support. We’ll be rolling in strong with a group of at least a dozen and ready to make an entire night of it in Sea Girt. Saturday nights plans are a little shakier, but make no mistake, we will be out in large numbers and spirit again, ready to put the cold, dark winter behind us!!

Happy Summer 2009!

2008 To-Do List: Revisited

I was having some fun with this site last summer, but things got so hectic weekend after weekend in July and August (we went out every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and in too many cases, out both nights) I just wasn’t able to keep up with this.

Whether this is a re-kick-off or just an isolated post remains to be seen, but figured I’d follow-up on my to-do list from last summer:

★ Check out Donovan’s Reef (pictured above) in Sea Bright for the first time
(NOPE: Part of our crew went there Labor Day weekend and gave it the big thumbs-down)
★ The Bar A Shot Wheel
(NOPE: did not return to Bar A until post-Labor Day)
★ Get a little Q time at Union Landing in Brielle
(NOPE: Most of my friends are not big fans of the Landing)
★ Log in some solid Patio Bar hours
(DONE: Despite ridiculously large crowds)
★ Forego Osprey and put in a night at Leggetts instead
(NOPE: “Leggetts sucks” and Osprey finished so so strong for us)
★ Return to O’Neills
(DONE: lower key night, but good crowd, great music one night out in August)
★ The OD Happy Hour in Sea Isle City
(NOPE: Never made it to SIC, but have a shore house for a week down there this year!)
★ Seaside Heights boardwalk on a Saturday night – still a must once a year.. but that’s it!
(NOPE: I inexcusably never did a true Seaside Heights boardwalk romp, though we did put in one night at Hooks)
★ Dinner instead of drinks at Parker House
(NOPE: Being anywhere near Parker House on a Friday invariably leads to excessive drinking)
★ Enjoy afternoon adult beverages on the beach at Tiki bar (NOPE: No beach boozin’ this year, mainly because the nights were filled with it)
★ Trip down the Pt Pleasant Canal
(DONE: The canal itself is boring, but once it opens up around Mantaloking… wow)
★ Kohr’s ice cream.. can’t believe I’ve waited this long already
(DONE: Only a handful of times, due to high frequency of post-beach DQ blizzards)
★ Post-beach Vic’s Pizza in Bradley Beach
(DONE: Labor Day weekend was closed out at Vic’s)
★ Trip to LBI or Beach Haven
(NOPE: With “the crew” reshuffling living arrangements, this looks more likely for summer ‘09)
★ Discover a new bar/restaurant/club that I can’t live without
(DONE: Sort of, but its a little weak. The Jackson Diner became a staple for Sunday mornings)

Just talking about last summer gets me pumped for this one.. I may be back for another post sooner than I first thought.

It’s a Holiday Weekend, Son

Fourth of July weekend, aside from being a big holiday weekend, also represents that moment in summer where you sit back and come to the realization that everything is in cruise control. And I mean this in a good way.

By now you’ve established your favorite spots (for us, Parker, Patio and Osprey are carrying medals), you generally know who you’ll be pre-gaming with and a significant percentage of the people you meet out at your spots are what you might consider the regulars, your summer friends.
So leading into the big holiday weekend we figured with minimal effort, it was going to be a big one, a long-lasting buzz that wouldn’t wear off until Sunday evening. Unfortunately, mother nature wasn’t about to cooperate..

After rumors of a $30 cover were effectively quashed, Thursday evening’s holiday kick off was at the Bar A “Summer Jam” featuring six bands including bachelor party helpers Headtripp, and our new favorites, Spit Roast Muppet. The outdoor bar early in the evening proved to be an ideal way to begin the holiday, but not long after the itch came – the bands were pulling out their best sets so it was time to head indoors.. and that’s where things, well, got a little mediocre. Sets were short, and in between, it was disco balls and who the F likes techno. SRM’s set was all too short, and then came the Big Bang bust, when the “angry benny music” came out and turned the dance floor into an overdose of testosterone. From having a good time at 12:30, most of us were out the door grabbing food at Belmar Pizza by 1 am.

Friday the 4th, we woke up all feeling crappy, with most feeling that feeling wasn’t worth it. I pulled out a run on the boardwalk but did not join the optimistic beach goers – despite a crowd of people on the sands of Belmar, the clouds were not about to part and let the sun shine through on this day.

Time was passed by way of movies and television really. For the fireworks, we got out on the boat and watched the pops and booms drifting along the Manasquan, which really was a sight to see and in terms of uniqueness of experience – and despite the steady showers coming down during the finale – probably the highlight of the weekend.

Saturday, a quick look skywards made it more of the same, so after grabbing a quick burger at JP’s Riverhouse in Brielle, it was back to more movies. By then, the weather had really killed the spirit though as it became clear there was to be no beach-going on this weekend. We tried to rally with wine and mojitos (not a good combination any way you look at it, really) and ended up back at Parker House in the late evening. But I was there in body only and even Rory Daniels couldn’t get me fired up and at one point I even left PH to take a stroll around the Girt. We just kind of let the weekend come to an uneventful end by 11 pm.

So it was a bad weekend, then, huh?
Well, that’s not really being entirely fair..

Thursday night brought a lot of interesting moments — the bike riding
ginger kids, “Mike Mills”, dropping the Lexus reference, the Boston chicks with the foul mouths and, of course, the Friday fireworks on the Squan was a fun show. But when you have strung together so many quality weekends previously, the expectations are there that the big four day holiday weekend has to exceed those. Holiday weekends tends to set the expectations a little too high – because if I piece together the best moments of the 4th of July weekend into the space of a normal weekend, this one would probably measure up a little bit better than the current aftertaste suggests.

Bachelor Party Antics

Whereas two weekends ago was a surprise gem, this past weekend had a ton of buildup going for it given that it was the big bachelor party weekend of the summer. Over the last couple of months, there was lots of discussion on where to go, who to invite, strategizing how to pace ourselves for an entire weekend, inappropriate e-mails getting caught in work spam filters… bottom line, a lot to live up to.

And yet again, the J-shore came through.

There was no need for the usual bachelor party antics – strippers and morsels of regret, instead it was meant to be like a typical Jersey shore night out with the guys and groom-to-be, well, except on crack. So it was back to Parker House to build up the night – back porch lobsters, downstairs cover bands – though Pat Roddy is no Undisputed, and even a little more fun upstairs with the gweed than we usually have. Lots of banter, including getting scolded for not being married by random girls. Parker clicked on a few more levels tonight.

Then, in another upset, instead of heading up to Belmar it was on to the little nightclub that could, despite the bachelor’s proclamation earlier that it was not in contention. At Osprey, Headtripp put on a hell of a show, pulling our buddy up on stage to sing along to Offspring’s “Come out and Play”.. Energy in the room was high all night (the sing-a-longs were exceptionally loud and frequent), shots were passed around, everyone was having a good time — well, except my camera, which met its demise sometime during the set three.

Back at a friend’s shore house, the antics continued – high levels of inappropriateness, late night BBQ’ing and smashing hamburger buns in each others faces. Just another overall dumb, fun night for late 20-something/early 30-somethings.

Saturday did sputter a bit, however. After an exercise in retardedness involving a couple of us retrieving our cars at Parker and attempting to follow each other back to our friend’s in Point during prime beach traffic, we then turned back around to hit the beach in Belmar. Gas prices are not a concern with a hangover, by the way.

It was then onto Patio for the evening hours once again, where one of our friends not out the night before joined us and proceeded to be a big, stinkin’ downer. Its summer, you’re eating dinner on the water, cute waitresses running around and this guy is all about dissing the food and instigating potentially contentious political debates. After he scowled his way back home to NY, we tried to hit the repeat button from last weekend by driving back on up to 507. There, we learned from the bouncer that the fight we saw last week put the kid in a coma for five days… and my comment about idiocy leading to it was spot on – apparently the kid had been talking smack all night about college football to some other random guy, who at the end of the night finally snapped.

Shortly after entering 507, it became apparent that the successes of last weekend here and rally effect was not going to be repeated. Eyes were droopy, yawns were coming, and we saw no need to hang around until the lights came back on (I ended up at a Baskin Robbins on Rt. 35..haha). Still, despite a weaker Saturday night, the anchor of the weekend was Friday night and it was a resounding success.

Closed things out at the Jackson diner in the morning, which by the way is a quality find for diner food without “the riff-raff” and typical Sunday morning crowds.

The Art of an Unplanned Epic

Epic is a strong word but bear with me.

During summer, there are always the big weekends that you come almost naturally – Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July weekend (depending on when the actual holiday falls), Labor Day weekend, Weddings, Bachelor Parties, etc. But then there’s those unexpected gems that periodically pop up during the summer, often going against the agenda laid out and containing non-stop action right from the moment work gets out through your Sunday morning (monster) hangover.

The weekend before, we were all pumped up for Sea Isle City, so much so that we had a planned “rest day” for Friday night. Well, neither happened, and things got a little ridiculous.

Friday evening instead brought $1 beers at Chez Parker with a brand new attitude. No longer concerned about the gweed, we decided to spend more time on the back porch indulging in the cheap burgers and lobsters, then moving onto the tavern downstairs with Undisputed. The nightclub, I think its safe to say, belongs to them, the Bensonhurst crowd. Its over, done, we’ve agreed to move on. Of note, there are other bathrooms in PH and you don’t have to use a stall (if that’s what the situation requires) with saloon doors. Quality find.

After dropping off the cavalry in Belmar (avoiding a likely regrettable trip to Leggets) and the obligatory late night food run, Saturday brought the hangovers, and an official end to Sea Isle City. Looked like it was going to be a slow recovery day, one of those that sputters to its inevitable end by sundown. So as the drizzle stopped and the clouds parted, we made our way to the beach in Belmar for some fun in the sun (following Surf Taco, of course), running into girls we had met out previously and learning of one of the great, if downright bizarre, summer stories.

Apparently, one friend of theirs wandered aimlessly in Sea Girt, alone and hammered, and decided to turn a random person’s Lexus SUV, which apparently had been left open, into her own personal sleeping area! Unfortunately, what would have made the story even better didn’t happen – there was no discovery of a random sleeping girl by the owners the next day.

Afterwards, spent a few breezy hours on the Manasquan River and Atlantic Ocean in the boat with some Coronas (and discovering the Water Taxi still runs!!), before deciding to hit the Patio for the first official night of summer 2008. There, finding a table involved cursing, scolding from old people, and hard looks from lost bennies. But the chill scene of the Patio was worth it, cougars were on the prowl, and we all had a great time and felt motivated to keep on rolling.

So, we shuffled on over back to 507 Main for the first time post-Memorial Day. Terrible crowd up front with the thumping beats of club music reverberating throughout, but a good crowd, fun time in the back. Rory Daniels was on the mic, and doing a nice little job in there, mixing in some Beatles, Franz Ferdinand, Dion and opening with:

Scotty Doesnt Know – Lustra

The only downer of the night, of the weekend, was when walking back for some pizza and chinese, seeing blood and paramedics on Main Street, the remnants of a brutal fight between, presumably, two idiots. Just uncalled for.

Sunday morning, all we could really do was the vehicle recovery game, picking up stranded cars in North Belmar, Sea Girt, and ultimately my own in Pt. Pleasant. Forty-two action-packed hours later, we were all free to finally recover and although nothing went as originally planned, good times were had and perhaps we’ll look back at this weekend as one of the standouts (among many) of this summer.

The Water Taxi Lives on

I was prepared to eulogize the Manasquan Water Taxi (despite only taking one trip on it myself) given the following key pieces of info:

• An article written about the owner last summer (no link available), speculating that 2007 might be the end
• Not seeing the taxi when boating on the squan over MDW
The Water Taxi website not being updated for 2008

BUT…

.. the Manasquan Water Taxi lives on, at least for another season. Literally minutes after erroneously discussing its death, we spotted it cruising down the Manasquan while on another boat ride ourselves yesterday evening. Further confirmation came at Patio Bar later that evening, reporting for duty once again on the hour.

Having thought we lost it already, it is now a must on the to-do list for this summer.

The To-Do List

We kicked off summer weeks ago, but with the official start of summer technically this Saturday, its time you and I make note of our wish list for the summer of 2008. Unless you commit pen to paper early, you’ll find yourself in mid-August with lots of plans but not enough time to execute.

So, without further ado, here are some of my not particularly ambitious to-do’s:

★ Check out Donovan’s Reef in Sea Bright for the first time
★ The Bar A Shot Wheel
★ Get a little Q time at Union Landing in Brielle
★ Log in some solid Patio Bar hours
★ Forego Osprey and put in a night at Leggetts instead
★ Return to O’Neills
★ Donovans avoids the wrecking ball one more
The OD Happy Hour in Sea Isle City
★ Seaside Heights boardwalk on a Saturday night – still a must once a year.. but that’s it!
★ Dinner instead of drinks at Parker House
★ Enjoy afternoon adult beverages on the beach at Tiki bar
★ Trip down the Pt Pleasant Canal
Kohr’s ice cream.. can’t believe I’ve waited this long already
★ Post-beach Vic’s Pizza in Bradley Beach
★ Trip to LBI or Beach Haven
★ Discover a new bar/restaurant/club that I can’t live without

Think of this as a living, breathing document. Add new ones as they come to mind and relish the success of being able to check one off. Another weekend begins tomorrow, and I hope/expect to address at least one of these!
